Jimi Manuwa

17-6, a former UFC light heavyweight contender, and one of the most destructive finishers the division has had. He comes back at 45 after nearly seven years away — in a different sport and a heavier weight class.

What he was

Manuwa built his UFC run on finishing power and ranks among the division's leaders for speed of finish — he historically ended fights faster than almost anyone at light heavyweight. His best nights followed the same shape: one clean connection and it was over. Ovince Saint Preux and Corey Anderson are on that list.

That profile ages unevenly. Power is the last attribute to go, so a heavy-handed veteran stays dangerous long after the rest fades. What goes earlier is the ability to absorb what comes back — and his career ended on a head kick from Aleksandar Rakic in June 2019.

Three problems at once

The layoff. Close to seven years without competition. Timing is the first thing to go and the last to come back, and it does not return in camp — it returns, if at all, in the fight itself.

The age. He is 45. Not disqualifying in boxing, where careers run longer, but it compounds everything else.

The opponent switch. He was matched with Rashad Coulter. Coulter came off the card and Chase Sherman — 18-14 with seventeen knockouts, and the man who beat Coulter — stepped in on roughly ten days' notice. That is a harder night than the one he prepared for.

Boxing, not MMA

The bout is under boxing rules at heavyweight. Manuwa's MMA game was built on striking, so the transfer is more natural than it would be for a grappler — but boxing rewards sustained defence and head movement over full rounds rather than one-shot power, and there is nothing to threaten except punches.

The realistic read is that it ends early in one direction or the other. Two heavy hitters, one of them cold for seven years, in a heavyweight ring.
