Video Poker
Video poker is the most transparent game in any casino and the most frequently misplayed. The entire return is determined by two things, both of which are visible before you put money in.
The two variables
The paytable. What each winning hand pays. This is printed on screen and it is the single biggest determinant of the game's return — two machines running identical odds can differ by several percent purely on what they pay for a full house and a flush.
Your play. Which cards you hold on the draw. Every deal has one mathematically correct hold, and the difference between playing correctly and playing by instinct is worth more than most people assume.
Everything else — the shuffle, the deal, the draw — is fixed and identical everywhere. There is no variance in the underlying deck between operators. The return is the paytable times the quality of your decisions, and nothing else.
What the hands are worth

Two numbers stand out. Better than half of all hands return nothing at all, which is why video poker feels colder than it is. And a royal flush is a one-in-forty-thousand event — the headline payout on the screen is real and it is not something to plan a session around.
Why the paytable is the whole game
The industry shorthand exists for a reason. A "9/6" machine pays nine for a full house and six for a flush; an "8/5" pays eight and five. Same deck, same frequencies, same correct strategy — and roughly two and a half percent of difference in return between them.
That is enormous. Two percent of every bet, on a game where the frequencies are fixed and public, decided by two numbers printed on the screen that most players never look at.
Check them before you play. It takes five seconds and it is worth more than any strategy adjustment you could make afterwards.
The correct-play problem
Video poker has an optimal hold for every one of the 2,598,960 possible deals, and optimal play is what the advertised return figures assume. Play by feel instead and the real return drops well below the printed number — which means a machine's stated RTP is a ceiling rather than an expectation.
The common errors follow a pattern. Holding a kicker with a pair costs money. Breaking a made flush to chase a royal costs money. Keeping three to a royal over a made straight is usually right and feels wrong, which is why almost nobody does it.
This is the same relationship that governs blackjack: the game's stated return assumes you play it correctly, and the gap between that assumption and reality is where the revenue lives.
Verification
Each deal and draw is committed before the hand and checkable against its seeds afterwards with the verifier. Given that video poker resolves in two stages — deal, then draw — that guarantee matters more here than in a single-stage game, since it covers the cards you did not see before deciding what to hold.
